‘Husker Red’ Penstemon
Penstemon digitalis ‘Husker Red’
Developed by the University of Nebraska, this cultivar of our native Beardtongue is best known for its dark red foliage. Panicles of white, tubular flowers will appear in late spring, and repeat bloom with dead heading. Best foliage color will occur when planted in full sun, but will tolerate light shade. The two to three foot tall plant will attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds while resisting deer. ‘Husker Red’ is adaptable to wet winters and hot humid Nebraska summers.
‘Husker Red’ Penstemon pairs well with many plants, but looks especially good with blue flowered plants such as catmint and ‘Rozanne’ Geranium. It also pairs nicely with pink flowers such as that of ‘Karmina’ Geranium. Plant it near Silver Carpet Lamb’s Ear for a bold contrast in the landscape.
