notes from the garden
Korean Maple
September 21st, 2009
As a garden designer, I realize there is a place for every plant…but that doesn’t mean I have to like them all! In fact, there are a few plants I really don’t like. Often my dislike is due to its over-use or misuse in the average American landscape. Some plants become fads, everyone loves and wants one, but doesn’t realize how many other (better) plants are out there.
One over-used plant is the Japanese Maple. Not that this plant doesn’t have some fine qualities, but there are others out there that are better alternatives.
The Korean Maple shares many attributes with the Japanese Maple, however, it shows better winter hardiness. Often indistinguishable from the Japanese Maple, is a small tree with finely dissected leaves. The form of the tree is more upright than its counterpart, and shows wonderful orange and red fall colors in its native Manchuria.
