Growing Paperwhites
December 17th, 2009
Paperwhites are small, delicate daffodils which are popular for forcing as they do not require a cooling period. They have become a favorite to brighten up a home in the cold winter months, when flowers have long since disappeared. Here are directions on how to force your own paperwhite garden (entire process should take 4-6 weeks):
- Choose a container 3-4 inches in height, which has no drainage holes.
- Place 1-2 inches of pebbles, glass beads or marbles in the bottom.
- Place the bulbs on top of the layer of pebbles. Go ahead and squeeze them in - the more you do, the better they will look.
- Top the bulbs with more pebbles.
- Fill with water, just to the bottom of the bulbs (too much water will cause rotting)
- Keep at about 65 degrees. Check daily to evaluate water needs.
- When you see roots beginning to grow, move to a sunnier window.
- Once in flower remove from direct sunlight to prolong bloom.
Now what? Use your beautiful indoor daffodils as a stunning centerpiece for a winter gathering of family and friends!
