notes from the garden

Winter Shadows

January 11th, 2010

Lighting is an important component of any landscape.  In the summer months it extends to time an outdoor space can be used, it guides people through the landscape safely, and accentuates garden features.  However, it is never more appreciated than during the barren winter months.  When the landscape is covered with a blanket of snow and trees and shrubs have lost their leaves.  It is now that we can most appreciate what lighting does for the winter landscapes.  Branching structures are revealed and lights force shadows across the reflective snow.  The ice and snow which adorn our winter plants glimmer as the lights illuminate them.  At a time when it is difficult to enjoy our landscapes, outdoor lighting enables us to enjoy our gardens, while we remain warm.
