notes from the garden

Late Summer Perennials

August 8th, 2009

As the brutal sun of late summer beats down, many of our vibrant colors of the early season have faded.  However, there are many plants yet to bloom - which would add a much needed burst of color to any garden.  Here are some great plants for adding color to your late summer garden landscape:

Belamcanda chinensis (Blackberry Lily)

With lily-like orange flowers appearing from July to August, Blackberry Lily will stand out among its peers.  The flowers fade into blackberry-like seed heads, adding even more interest as the season wears on.  Plant with blue or purple companions such as, Russian Sage, for an eye catching combo.

Platycodon grandiflorus (Balloon Flower)

Called Balloon Flower for its flower buds which balloon up just prior to blooming.  The blue-purple, star shaped blooms appear for four weeks starting in August.  Though, it is slow to establish and dislikes being transplanted (due to its tap root) it is well worth the wait.

Ceratostigma plumbaganoides (Plumbago)

This groundcover has brilliant blue flowers which begin appearing in August, and often remain until frost.  The green foliage is tinted  with red and bronze colors in fall, making it a true standout.  It is especially nice when paired with red or bronze colored fall blooming sedums.

Gaura lindheimeri (Apple Blossom Grass)

From spring to autumn, this fine textured grassy plant is covered with pink butterfly-like flowers.  It love hot, dry, well drained conditions, and tolerates humidity, but just doesn’t seem to make it through our winters.  However, it is definitely worth planting.  You’ll get your money’s worth, even if is just for one season!
