Gal Behind the Garden: Lindsey Moore | Kinghorn Gardens

Lindsey Moore, Garden Department Manager
Joined the Team: August 2009

On the job activities:

In the gardens, I’m responsible for complete property management.  If not already determined from my prior visit, I decide on the day’s activities, could be pruning, spraying, pulling weeds, watering, general clean up and tidiness, transplanting and/or dividing perennials.  I typically spend some time studying the property to determine if the plants and plant material are at the level of performance that I am looking for. Our goal is to get out there and make the most of our day, every day, everywhere we go.

Garden Guru from:

My love for the outdoors comes from my parents. My father and grandfathers are farmers. As a young girl, I can remember planting vegetable gardens in the spring and caring for them in the summer through the direction of my mother. I would water the garden and pull the weeds.  When it came time to harvest, we would just pop open those sweet pea pods, and eat the peas, straight from the garden.  Yummy!  I still love spending time outside.  Even if it’s a cold day or a sweltering hot day, I’ll make myself, and my kids, go outside.  We need the fresh air.

Gotta have it gardening tool:

Clean, sharp pruners

If you could add any one plant to your garden, what would it be?

I desperately need a white pine or two in my backyard.  My neighbors cut down their spruce and pine trees, which were my evergreen backdrop.  No longer there, I need a screen to block off their homes and backyards.

Favorite Holiday:

Christmas!  I love the way my home feels cozy when it’s decorated for this holiday.

Gotta See It Garden:

You gotta visit the Lurie Garden in Millennium Park in Chicago if you haven’t already.  It’s an incredible space, showcasing the future of gardening.

Favorite part of the garden:

The overstory trees, or an arbor above my head. I love that natural ceiling, makes it feel more protected.

Least favorite garden hurdle:

Rolling up that pesky garden hose, or unrolling that pesky garden hose that is in knots.  Anyone looks like a fool, trying to undo a knotty garden hose.

Best part about wearing a purple polo:

Wearing the purple polo allows me to step onto some really cool land in the Omaha region.  Some gardens are just jaw-dropping, stop you in your tracks beautiful, and I feel pretty lucky to be a part of it. My purple polo also, allows me to meet some awesome people, clients and co-workers.  I am proud to be a part of the Kinghorn Purple Polo Family.

Fictional garden you’d like to visit:

The planet, Naboo looks like an incredible place to explore.

How do you enjoy your at home garden?

With my family.  I like to make sure my boys are out in the garden, while I’m out there tending to it.  My favorite part is when the boys eat the raspberries straight from the vine.  They love fresh raspberries!  In the summer, after a hot day of working outside, my boys want to be outside, so we eat popsicles and watch the sprinkler water the yard.

One thing you can’t live without:

A good pair of running shoes

What’s something you’d like to cross off your bucket list?

Going to visit the giant redwood trees in California, going to Europe to see some European gardens, and visiting more National Parks across America

Purple Polo Pro Gardening Tip:

When it comes to watering your plants, it’s not how long you water a plant, its how frequently you water the plant.  Wet soil absorbs more water more than dry soil. Always check the soil to make sure the water is getting where you want it to be.  Pull back the mulch, dig your fingers into the soil and make sure the roots are wet.  You will know if you’re doing it right.
