In 2016, Harrison Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Association gathered grant funding to have an outdoor classroom created for their school. They were interested in building an outdoor classroom because they wanted their students to have an opportunity to spend more time outside amongst nature during the school day.
The school actually had a handful of designs created by landscape companies across the Omaha metro and the Kinghorn Gardens design, created by landscape designer Anne Houser, was chosen by the PTA and teachers.
“I think the space that Kinghorn Gardens made for us is going to be an amazing resource for the school. As a parent, the reason I wanted to support this project and to get involved is because I feel like our kids are spending too much time sitting in a desk in the school building,” said Angela, a member of Harrison Elementary School’s PTA. In fact, “Research shows that children are spending half as much time outside as they did 20 years ago – and much more time doing “inside activities,” states the National Wildlife Federation on their website.
