Gal Behind the Garden: Ann Thompson | Kinghorn Gardens

2015 Kinghorn-1

Ann Thompson, Gardening Crew Member

Joined the Team: May 2011

Day-to-day activities:

Planting annuals, perennials and bulbs; spreading mulch, pruning flowers, shrubs, and trees; watering flowers; raking leaves; spring and fall clean-ups; and whatever else comes up.

Garden guru from:

Horticulture classes at Metropolitan Community College and lots of on the job training from other Purple Polos.

Favorite plant and why:

Rocky Mountain Blue Columbine. The reason I like this flower is that it is unique and delicate in its beauty. I always take many pictures of them every time I visit Rocky Mountain National Park along the trails. Unfortunately for me, their bloom time is short, usually in July.

What does the Purple Polo mean to you?

Wearing the uniform emphasizes that we are a team, working together and consulting our lead gardeners and co-workers to accomplish our tasks efficiently.

Where did you get your green thumb:

My mother’s grandfather was a gardener, a farm boy who emigrated in 1913 to the United States from Scotland with this young wife. They raised two daughters, even sending them to college, with his seasonal income from gardening for numerous homeowners. I’ve always been proud of our immigration story and where my green thumb comes from.

Hidden talent:

Baking bread.

Hobbies:

Traveling; hiking, snowshoeing and skiing in Colorado. I also enjoy photography, especially taking pictures of flowers.

Celebrity garden crush:

Denver Botanic Gardens, Phoenix Cactus Gardens and several botanic gardens I’ve seen in Scotland and England.

Favorite food:

Potatoes and funnel cakes.

Most important part of the garden:

The layout and colors so each plant compliments the others.

At work warm and fuzzies:

Seeing the results of the tasks I do. I’m especially thrilled in the spring with the blooming tulips, remembering the hard work of planting bulbs in the fall.

One thing you can’t live without:

As a person who can’t use the telephone, my computer and iPhone keep my connected to my friends and family, both deaf and hearing.

Least favorite garden critter:

Creepy, wiggly worms.

Favorite gardening quote:

It’s spring! I’m so excited, I wet my plants!
