2014 Project Review | Kinghorn Gardens

Two thousand fourteen was a big year for Kinghorn Gardens. Although every year seems bigger then the previous when you continue to take care of regular maintenance properties while adding improvements, creating new spaces and growing your horticultural knowledge; but our 27th year really was huge! We look back over January through December with excitement over all the beautiful experiences we have created for both our clients and our employees. So many memories, and so many more to come from the finished products.

2014 Timeline

March – Scottsbluff Masterplan

Our first big project of the year required a seven hour commute to Scottsbluff Nebraska. This town of 15,000, in the midst of downtown revitalization projects, called on Dropseed Studio for a hand in the green side of the renovations. Stormwater management and low input plant material were a top priority. Phase 1 design plans were completed the end of March.

April – Wedding Garden Wrap Up

Adding the finishing touches to this 2013 design once the ground thawed was important due to the large list of couples lining up to tie the knot in the space. And thanks to Dropseed Studio and the Purple Polos, this urban wedding destination in downtown Omaha is now the perfect place for nontraditional “I dos.”

May – Anne Chicago Training

In May, Anne hit the road, heading for the windy city and the Healthcare Garden Design Certificate of Merit Program at the Chicago Botanic Garden. She continued to be inspired by the healing power of nature and looked forward to applying the theories and principles to her future designs.

June – Patio Overhaul

Omaha homeowners in need of a change sought out Kinghorn Gardens to overhaul their wood deck surrounded by a cumbersome privacy fence in the backyard. Designer Zack Fergus created an extended entertaining space with a two tiered stone patio, complemented by new backyard planting beds. We are sure this space was a great addition to the client’s outdoor time in 2014.

 June – Project Harmony

After brining the restorative butterfly garden to life in March with bright blue wings, a green body planter, and springy orange antennas, the time came to plant. Over a dozen Purple Polos helped cover the huge butterfly with tons of living color. Watch the metamorphosis here.

August – Tremendous Tree Planting

Transforming blank dirt hillsides into Colorado inspired forests in just a few short days may become our speciality after the amount of arbors we  planted in August. Remember the two 17ft, 6,600 lb. spruce trees? Our crews sure do!

September – Nate & Bryan Chicago Visit

In search of some inspiration, Nate and Bryan flew off to Chicago Botanic Garden for a day of research and plant admiration.

September – Greenroof

This project was impressive to say the least. When job sites starts with cranes and involves 3,800 plants, you know it’s going to be interesting. So. Much. Time-lapse. Footage.

September – Barrier Free Landscape Front Yard Design

To complement the now giant forest in the backyard, the front yard design was finalized for the barrier free landscape of this District 66 home. With the more cooperative then normal fall and winter, we were able to add sod, more trees and even plant bulbs at our client’s new home, a great start of Spring 2015.

October – Creative Water Management

A muddy side yard with little use was transformed into a beautiful stone patio/walkway with a dry creek bed and new plantings. The unique patio now connects the front side yard to the back side yard as well as a utility door to the back porch all while solving the family’s stormwater problem. Nate and Zack’s responsive design solution speak to both the form and function of the space.

December – Wintergreen Themes

This year we invited our readers to follow us on our wintergreen journey from the first words of inspiration to the final designs and creations. Covering Fresh Traditions, Vintage Flair, and Peaceful Nights, wintergreen expert Nate Huse, guided viewers through each theme in quick DIY style videos.

Two thousand fourteen brought so many amazing plants, projects and client memories. We can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store for us and your gardens. Happy New Year!
