Fall Planting Perks | Kinghorn Gardens

Most plant lovers would say planting season is limited to spring and early summer, but then again most plant lovers would be wrong. While spring and summer are ideal, fall sure has a few planting merits worth noting. So in the midst of discussing how to add the fall palate to your garden in Harvest Season Hues, let’s boast a little for fall and why it can be an excellent time to plant.

Mums the Word

Fall Planting Perks

  1. New plants require fewer waterings.
  2. The cooler weather makes it more comfortable for you and your plants! It’s much more enjoyable to be digging in the dirt with a cool September breeze than under the hot July sun; plus plants still have plenty of time to root in before winter comes.
  3. Fall typically has good moisture.
  4. In the fall, your plants have reached some maturity so it is easier to spot “holes” in your garden to fill with new material or re-asses how certain varieties have performed over the growing season.
  5. A fall planting is more likely to fit in with the rest of your garden come spring.
  6. Fall is the season when Mother Nature does her planting so it must be a good idea.
  7. Soil temperature is ideal for planting and root establishment in fall.
  8. Maintenance inputs are much less in fall compared to any other planting season.
  9. New fall plantings will give you something exciting to look forward to when spring rolls around!

Fall Planting

Fall is a season we typically characterize with the end of our garden’s lifecycle but it doesn’t have to be. Now you can extend your planting season and time digging in your garden from March to October in the great state of Nebraska. You’re welcome.
