Pumpkin Possibilities | Kinghorn Gardens

When it comes to Fall decorations, pumpkins play a major part. We all have a soft spot for those giant, bright orange ones that we carve into silly and scary faces for Halloween, but after we’ve thrown those into the compost heap there are some worth keeping around until Thanksgiving.  Here are a few of our favorite pumpkin varieties, mix and match for the best results!

One of the most beloved variety of pumpkin is the ‘Cinderella’ variety, which is a French Heirloom rumored to have been the model for the Fairy Godmother’s carriage in the classic tale. Recorded as being grown by the Pilgrims, and served at the second Thanksgiving, only recently has its popularity risen. It’s coloration is a deep red to orange with deep ribbing and a flattened shape.

Though Blue Hubbard is regarded as a squash, it finds itself right at home placed with pumpkins. It has a beautiful blue-gray rind and is somewhat warty, with an irregular oblong shape. Don’t expect this one to stand up on its own, it will need something to lean on, or lay on its side.

Jarrahdale is a result of a cross between the Blue Hubbard and Cinderella. It has the wonderful coloring of the Blue Hubbard with Cinderella’s shape.

Ghost and Baby Boo’s are both pure white pumpkins that will standout amongst any others. They are also wonderful for painting…they come already primed!
